Linens

Your rental includes a linen package that will provide linens when you sign your rental agreement.

Groceries

One of the reasons Avon is a great location is that we have a Food Lion near us.  A Food Lion is a full-service grocery store.  Every Saturday or Sunday, everyone on the island is either leaving or arriving.  So upon your arrival you are going to want to head out to the Food Lion ... with EVERYONE else on the island.  Here is their website where you can check times, specials, etc.

There is a Keurig in the condo.  Bring your pods!

The Food Lion website

If you have room, think about bringing some of this stuff with you:

  • Trash bags for the kitchen garbage and other trash cans
  • Dish soap
  • Salt and pepper (I try to keep it in stock, but I can't guarantee it)
  • Paper towels and sponges
  • Laundry detergent
  • Fabric softener sheets for the dryer
  • Keurig pods

BUGS

Rarely are bugs a problem because of the wind.  As long as the wind is blowing, the bugs don't show up.  But if that wind dies down there will be flies during the day and mosquitoes at night.  BRING BUG REPELLANT.

There is a rule about bugs:  WIND IS GOOD!  Wind = no bugs!

Clothes

While a T-shirt, shorts and Tevas are my choice, the Outer Banks are very windy.  In the evening of the warmest day it can be cool.  Sitting on the deck watching the ocean disappear into the night may require a sweatshirt.

If you're here in the colder months, that wind really bites.  Warmer, windproof clothes are a necessity.  The Cleveland, Ohio snowbelt at -10 degrees F is toasty compared to the Outer Banks humid, steady 25 mile-per-hour wind and a tempterature of 30 degrees F.

Rain gear will help should you have an emergency in a storm.  I always take it but never have had to use it.

Your arrival

If you're like me, nothing calls to me like a fresh baked pizza from a local pizza shop.  Be careful.  Pizza on the island is expensive.  It will likely cost you more than you expected, around $40.00.  There is on exception to this, which is quite close to the condo, that is Gidget's which is by the Food Lion.  Great pizza.

A pan of one of the Stouffer's meals like mac and cheese, lasagna or the like can be stored frozen in the car and heated up on your arrival.  A frozen pizza can be put in the car and thrown in the oven on arrival.  Make something yourself and freeze it prior to your departure.

Check my restaurant page for information on Bros Sandwich Shack or Pangaea Tavern.  All can provide a good meal on arrival.
